Understanding your cycle and its influence on strength training is crucial for results. Research into female teams and athletes throughout their careers has highlighted how the menstrual cycle can impact training effectiveness. To take advantage of this research, below are three simple tips for boosting your strength workouts.

  1. Align Training with Your Cycle Phases: Tailor workouts to the different menstrual cycle phases. During the follicular phase (days 1-14), take advantage of the increased energy and focus on strength training. In the luteal phase (days 15-28), switch to some lower-intensity or recovery-based workouts due to potential fatigue.

  2. Adjust Intensity Based on Energy Levels: Adapt workout intensity to energy fluctuations during the cycle. Recognise when your energy levels are higher for more rigorous training and lower-energy days for lighter sessions to optimise performance and recovery.

  3. Prioritise Recovery and Nutrition: Pay attention to recovery strategies and nutrition. During the luteal phase, when injury risk might be higher, focus on recovery techniques. Adequate nutrition, especially iron intake, can support energy levels throughout the cycle.

Women can optimise their strength training by aligning training with the different phases of the menstrual cycle, adjusting intensity according to energy levels, and prioritising recovery and nutrition.

Understanding the interplay between the menstrual cycle and training helps women adapt their workouts to achieve better results while working with their body's natural fluctuations.
