Inflammation

Do you get the cold all the time, or sore joints and general fatigue?

These symptoms seem to be on the rise more and more these days and are all linked to chronic inflammation and according to the World Health Organization are only set to rise over the coming years.

What is inflammation? Simply put it is your body's response to potential harm, such as infections, injuries, and unknown stimuli. To heal itself your body signals the immune system to begin its work and inflammation is a by-product of this. There is a growing body of evidence that points the finger at the modern lifestyle as being the primary culprit in this surge of conditions. Interestingly, the primary way to combat this comes from over 2500 years ago by a Greek physician Hippocrates who said 2 things “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”, and "Walking is man's best medicine”. This has now been backed by the research and having looked into this here are my top 7 tips for reducing inflammation from recent science-based on 2500-year-old common sense.

1. Meditate, there is strong evidence showing meditation can combat inflammation.

2. Reduce your carbohydrate intake.

3. Eat a rainbow. “5 a day” with the latest research suggesting 2 fruit and 3 veg

4. Try intermittent fasting.

5. Cut back on processed foods.

6. Get in regular exercise.

7. Improve the quality of your sleep.

These tips alone will not control inflammation, but by making appropriate choices you can limit its effects and stop it from getting worse, it’s not about doing everything, but something is better than nothing and I love “action” so, let me know — what will you work on?


LIVEWRIGHT EATS

Traditional Tomato Soup

Traditional Tomato Soup

What you'll need...

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil

  • 1/2 medium onion chopped

  • 5 medium tomatoes chopped

  • 2 cups low-sodium organic chicken broth or vegetable broth

  • 1 tsp. lemon pepper to taste; optional

How to make it...

  1. Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat.

  2. Add onion; cook, stirring frequently, for 3 to 4 minutes, or until onion is soft.

  3. Add tomatoes; cook, stirring frequently, for 2 to 3 minutes, or until tomatoes are soft.

  4. Add broth. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and gently boil for 15 minutes.

  5. Place soup and lemon pepper (if desired) in a blender or food processor; in 2 or more batches, if necessary; cover with lid and kitchen towel, blend until smooth.

  6. Portion into 4 serving bowls.

Container Equivalents: 1½ Green 1 tsp.
